A trailer with a lot of history

HUWI trailer

Some products are more than just technology. They become witnesses to history, reliable companions across generations. The ‘HUWI’ trailer is just such a product – and a genuine piece of Winkelbauer DNA.

HUWI

Reliable since 1952

Company founder Hubert Winkelbauer (1912-1966) was considered a visionary early on. As early as 1952, he manufactured the first pattern-protected tractor trailer – at a time when horses and oxen were still the order of the day in many places. This trailer laid the foundation for later machine and vehicle construction in the 1970s and 1980s and was given a name that was to make history: HUWI.

What is considered sustainable today was a matter of course at HUWI. Many of the trailers produced back then are still in use today. Robustly built, durable and repairable, the HUWI was not designed for the moment, but for a whole working life – often beyond.

From the craft

For series production

With Franz Winkelbauer, the original idea became a well thought-out model for success. He developed a modular system that combined flexibility and series production and made the HUWI ready for series production. By the mid-1990s, over 12,000 HUWI trailers had been sold – clear proof of practicality and quality.

At the same time, this period was characterised by a particular area of tension: In the late 1940s, the first trailers emerged, while horses and oxen were still being shod in the workshop – a tradition that lasted until the 1960s. The HUWI epitomises this transition from traditional craftsmanship to modern agriculture. The last tipper in the familiar green was delivered in 1994. The current Managing Director Michael Winkelbauer was also part of this era and welded and assembled dozens of HUWI tippers himself at the end of the 1980s.
